The fastest cars in the world often don’t come with a small price tag. Lots of speed costs lots of money – money that not everyone can afford. Fast cars are fun, flashy and perfect for a car enthusiast. They litter the pages of car magazines and are constantly the focus of online publications, but they often seem a world away for regular drivers.
However, fast cars are not as out of reach as you would think. Affordability is as much a part of the automobile market as luxury and speed; sometimes, the three can even combine. Here are five of the fastest affordable cars on the market – starting at as little as £16,995 up to £34,170. Not quite the hundred thousand pound plus price tag you would expect for speed!
Volkswagen Golf GTI
The 2.0-litre TSI 220 PS 3dr has an impressive top speed of 152mph and it can be yours from £25,845. It has an engine capacity of 1,984cc, a max power of 217bhp and weight of 1,452kg. The TSI 220 PS 3dr can get from 0-62mph in 6.5 seconds. It is a landmark car with sporty features and is complete with a manicured look. VW made a huge impact with this car when they first released it in the 1970s and it continues to be a powerful player on the fast car scene.
Peugeot 308 GTI 270
This model provides an ‘exhilarating driving experience’ for lovers of fast cars. It has a new gloss black checkered radiator grille, re-profiled front bumper and an imposing stance. It has a sporty personality to match its specifications and is 100% digital. It has a top speed of 155mph, can get from 0-62mph in 5.8 seconds and can be yours from £28,590. It is a genuine alternative to a Volkswagen Golf GTI.
Skoda Octavia VRS 230
It has unique 19-inch rims, a rear spoiler, gloss-black grille and door mirrors, which all add to a sporty appeal. It is fitted with a sports exhaust system which complements the look further. It is two-tenths slower than the Golf GTI at 0-62mph in 6.7 seconds. It has a top speed of 155mph and prices start from £26,150.
SEAT Leon ST Cupra 300
The SEAT Leon model is the most expensive car on this list at £34,170. It can, however, get from 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds, beating the Skoda Octavia. The top speed places it in line with the others at 155mph. It has 19-inch alloy wheels, a new finish on the grille and looks sporty for a more family oriented car with an appetite for speed.
Ford Fiesta ST
While this is the slowest car on the list at 139mph, it also has the smallest price tag at £16,995. It can go from 0-62mph in 6.9 seconds and is a feisty little car. It responds quickly to the throttle, looks sporty and is well equipped and packed with kit.
